It’s always great to see riders succeed but two wins in the same day is really exciting.
The weekend saw the Bill Higson Memorial Cyclo-Cross event, round 3 of the Wessex League, a really well organised day long schedule of races put on by Reading Cycling Club in Prospect Park Reading.
First it was Katie Scott on the Women’s race. As I was busy on other things, I hadn’t had a chance to talk with her beforehand but as soon I saw her come through on the first lap, it was evident she was all set up for a good ride. She quickly pulled out a commanding lead and continued to build upon this during the 40 minute race, the lumpy course clearly allowing her to capitalize on her strengths. Katie won the race overall and was also first Junior, receiving a nice trophy.
Callum Macleod’s race was the last of the day and his first one in the senior category. He had just come back from a two week break after an excellent road season and, like Katie earlier, he quickly built up a strong lead, all the more impressive after a fall on the second lap. At one point Callum’s lead was well over 2 minutes but at the finish just a shade under.
Both riders were delighted with their respective wins and it bodes well for the forthcoming National Trophy Round 1 in Derby next weekend. Could be even more exciting!
